Training and capacity building follow-on activities.

Five courses were delivered under the RICAMARE concerted action.

Courses are very different from workshops.

Workshops need to be held only once (or at regular spaced times when knowledge evolves rapidly) and leads to conclusions and recommendations, which have to be implemented through research or demonstration programs.

Courses allow to build capacities and have a stronger scientific community in order to address the issues linked to Global Change in the Mediterranean in a multidisciplinary and international way.

To reach that goal, the courses should attract both young scientists willing to invest themselves in these innovative research domains, and senior scientists willing to extend their field of expertise in order to lead multidisciplinary research projects.

Developing socio-economic and integrated assessment approaches has to be encouraged. Developing capacity building in non-EU countries should be considered as a priority.

So, the RICAMARE courses need to be duplicated and improved ; new subjects have to be developed. The teaching material should be centralised by MEDIAS-France.

A strong recommendation of the last RICAMARE Steering Committee meeting was to take advantage of the impetus given by the five RICAMARE courses to set up future training actions. It is quite mandatory to develop in parallel innovative research and capacity building. The RICAMARE courses sponsors have to be sensitised to that issue. Efforts should be made to have new sponsors.

MEDIAS-France and the sponsors of the RICAMARE courses were invited to take that recommendation into account.
