CO-ORDINATING LAND USE AND COVER DATA AND ANALYSES IN EUROPE

principal investigator : Professor M.L. Parry

The overall objective of the concerted action project "CLAUDE" is to develop an internally consistent programmes on this issue. This project comes at a time when the effective use of land is becoming an issue of increasing focus within the European Union. There is a need for greater diversity of land use as well as for more environmentally-friendly forms of production. At the same time, there are other emerging programmes and projects such as the Global Terrestrial Observing System (GTOS), the Land Use and Land Cover Change Project (LUCC) of IHDP and IGBP, and IIASA's Land Use and Land Cover Project (LULC) to which current EU activities on land use and land cover should link.

The project will evaluate land use and land cover (LUC) data collection methods and data base structures as currently used and developed in several countries of the EU in relation to environmental management and policy formulation needs. This will allow the assessment and monitoring of land use and cover changes, including ecosystem process changes, at different scales as a major input into a future and new joint approach to LUC in theEU.
